Library Policies

Taking Books Out

Books may be read in the Main Reading Room or in one of the several smaller rooms, or they may be checked out. Patrons are responsible for checking books out themselves, by scanning the books' barcodes at the Library's check-out station, located to the right of the elevators as one leaves. New books may be kept for two weeks and older books for three. Books may be reserved for members who are also welcome to make suggestions for acquisitions. If books are not returned, a member's house account will be charged the replacement cost of the book(s) plus a $25 processing fee. These charges also apply to books presumed lost.

Etiquette

So that the Library can continue to be a peaceful enclave in which to escape the metropolitan cacophony just outside its walls, the Library and Arts Committee asks that all patrons observe traditional guidelines for behavior in a library: talking is discouraged and the use of cell-phones is prohibited. Except during special events, eating and drinking are not permitted in the Library. Books must be checked out for all use, even elsewhere in the Club.

Volunteers

The Library has enjoyed the contributions of a wonderful core of volunteers over the years, and encourages anyone interested in donating his or her time or talent to contact Librarian Louise Jones at 212-716-2129.

Book Donations

The Library welcomes donations of books in good condition; please see the Librarian for guidelines, as certain materials (periodicals, annuals) are not accepted.
