House Rules
I. The House will be open seven days a week from 7:00 a.m. to midnight. After midnight, only registered room guests will be admitted. Members will be issued identification cards and are expected to display them when entering the House or upon request. Upon resignation or termination of membership, identification cards must be returned to the Member Services office.
II. Food or beverage may not be brought into the House for consumption in a public area. Cigarette smoking is permitted in designated guestrooms only. Cigar or pipe smoking is prohibited throughout the House.
III. The House Committee requests that all members and guests observe the following dress requirements. Club employees have been instructed to call attention to violations and to request that the Member conform to the rules.
Traditional business attire (jackets and neckties for men, equally appropriate attire for women) is always welcome in all public rooms. Business casual dress, as defined below, is required in all public rooms except for the athletic facilities at all times.
- Business casual dress for men includes: collared shirts, turtlenecks or sweaters; dress slacks, khakis or corduroy trousers; and socks.
- Business casual dress for women includes: collared shirts, blouses, turtlenecks or sweaters; and skirts or tailored pants.
Not permitted are: denim, shorts, tee shirts, casual sandals, athletic wear of any kind (including footwear and caps), and torn, provocative or revealing clothing. At all times a reasonable standard of neatness should be observed.
IV. Business Meetings, which require obvious use and display of papers, are disruptive to other Members and are not permitted. A quiet business conversation among two or three people is permissible. Club employees have been instructed to call attention to violations and to request that the Member conform to the rules.
V. In consideration of Members and guests, the use of electronic devices in the House is discouraged. Upon entering the House, mobile phones should be set so that incoming calls are received on vibrate only/silent. Actual use of or conversation on a mobile phone is permitted only in areas directly adjacent to the public telephones, enclosed stairwells, and the lobby. In all other areas of the House, mobile phone ringer volume should be turned off. The use of personal computers is not permitted in public rooms with the exception of the Library Music Room.
Unauthorized photography of Members, guests, Club staff and Club property is prohibited within all areas of the Clubhouse. This includes photography with photo-capable cell phones. These rules apply to the gym and locker room areas as well as all other public areas of the Club.
VI. No Member or guest may use any Club stationery or issue any other communication bearing the name or identity of the Club for business purposes, publication or release to the news media.
VII. The renting of guestrooms will be under the regulation of the House Committee. Guestrooms will be rented only to Members, to guests properly introduced and to those with signing privileges. Check-in time is 3:00 p.m. Upon arrival, a Member or guest renting a guestroom must confirm with the Front Desk the planned period of occupancy set at the time of reservation. All rooms must be vacated by noon on the date of departure, or the occupant will be charged for an extra night's rental. Under no circumstances may a reciprocal club member (a Yale Club guest) act as a guest sponsor for renting rooms. Room reservations must be cancelled by 6:00 p.m. on the day prior to arrival to avoid a one-night room charge.
VIII. Newspapers, magazines and books belonging to the Club may not be marked or otherwise defaced; nor may they be taken from any room in the House. Books may be taken from the Library to other rooms in the House, or may be taken from the House premises if a proper receipt is signed under rules posted in the office of the Librarian. Late return of books is subject to a charge as set by the Library and Arts Committee.
IX. Children are permitted in the House with proper attire and constant adult supervision. Children under the age of seventeen (17) must be accompanied by an adult when using the Club's athletic facilities.
X. Members are responsible for the conduct of guests they sponsor, for informing their guests of the House Rules, including the dress code, and for all debts incurred by their guests.
XI. Except for seeing-eye dogs, pets will not be allowed in the House.
XII. Requests, suggestions and complaints in regard to the Club should be in writing, signed and addressed to the chair of the House Committee. Matters requiring immediate attention may be taken up with the General Manager of the Club or the Manager on Duty.
XIII. Employees may not be sent out of the House on private business.
XIV. No gratuity of any kind may be given to an employee by any Member or guest.
XV. Cash payments for Club services are not permitted. All charges must be signed for with proper signature and the correct account number. Upon request, guests of Members may settle their accounts by credit card. All reciprocal club members are required to settle their accounts by credit card.
XVI. As soon as practicable after the first day of each month, a statement of account will be sent to each Member showing the amount due the Club. This amount is payable upon receipt. Late payment of a bill beyond thirty days is subject to a charge as set by the Finance Committee.
Should an amount remain unpaid for 60 days or more, membership or guest privileges are suspended. The maximum amount of credit extended to Members and guests will be set by the Treasurer.
XVII. No Member may authorize the use of the Member's account number by any other person under any circumstances.
A Member may request annual authorization for signing privileges for his or her spouse. The charge for signing privileges will be established by the House Committee.
A spouse or domestic partner having signing privileges will be issued his or her own membership number and card and will receive separate statements. The Member will be responsible for the payment of all charges by the spouse to whom signing privileges have been authorized.
In the event a Member's credit is suspended, all privileges of the spouse or partner are automatically suspended.
XVIII. The General Manager or his designate has the authority to maintain order in all parts of the House.
XIX. Owners are responsible for their own property in the Club. The Club will exercise diligence in protecting the property of Members and guests in the House, but will not be responsible for any damage to or loss of such property.
XX. The public spaces of the Club, including the Main Lounge, Library and restaurants are for use by Members of the Club and their guests. Gatherings of more than 10 individuals as a party will not be permitted in public areas or in a guest room. Members should contact the Banquet department to organize a party of more than 10 within the Club.
XXI. The House Committee may exclude a Member or guest from the House for inappropriate or unbecoming conduct, including disorderly conduct, until the Council takes action under Bylaw 42.
Members who violate the House Rules, or sponsor guests who commit violations, will be subject to disciplinary action by the House Committee, up to and including expulsion of the Member.
Excluded or suspended Members or guests will not be permitted to enter the House under any circumstances, and any attempt to enter will result in permanent loss of membership or guest privileges.
Rules for admitting Guests
A Member may entertain guests in the House in accordance with the following rules:
A person who is not accompanied by a Member will not be admitted to the House unless a Member has made a prior arrangement with the Club, in writing, in person or by telephone. Guests may wait for Members in the lobby.
A person may, on introduction by a Member, and for a fee, be granted a guest card extending the privileges of the Club for a period of two consecutive weeks once every three months.
At the discretion of the House Committee, guest cards may be granted for temporary periods longer than two weeks. A monthly charge for such privileges will be established by the House Committee.
The House Committee may admit, by vote, persons of distinction to the privileges of the Club for a period not exceeding thirty days.
The House Committee may withdraw the privileges of use of the House by a guest at any time. Under no circumstances may a reciprocal club member sponsor a guest.
